About waka Waka is a very traditional, short form of Japanese poem.
The poems appear in the original Japanese, transcribed into the Roman alphabet (Romanised) and translated into English. Waka are classical Japanese five-line poems of 31 syllables arranged in a 5-7-5-7-7 syllable pattern.
