The first great, mind-tickling treat of the new movie year. Both funny and clever. I preferred the former, and this movie ended way to soon for me.
Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story is a hall of mirrors that doesn’t tease the brain (it’s easier to watch than to read about) so much as goose it into submission. When the dailies point out the low-budget approach and thus don't bode well for the film's success, the crew decides to reinsert the previously jettisoned love story, thus necessitating the hiring of Gillian Anderson (GILLIAN ANDERSON) to play Widow Wadman. It's all a bit precious and preening, but Coogan is marvelous, almost as good as he was in Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People." Tristram Shandy: Vols. But that hasn't deterred the cast or crew -- including director Mark (JEREMY NORTHAM), producer Simon (JAMES FLEET) and screenwriter Joe (IAN HART) -- from giving it their best shot. It's really inventive and bizarre and marvelously entertaining. Comedy: A small cast and movie crew try to film a reportedly un-filmable but famous novel. Has about a dozen layers of in-joke, and up to the eighth or ninth layer, they mostly work. Long deemed unfilmable, the 18th century novel finds the perfect interpreters in director Michael Winterbottom and actor Steve Coogan. Some comedy-based bad attitudes are present, as is a brief moment of thinking a newborn is dead (in the movie within the movie) but that turns out to be incorrect.
