I'm not well versed on Cuba or the Cuban mob in the US, but I could not put this down. Since corporations have come to have a profound influence on society and people, it’s compelling to read a thoughtful, plausible analysis of why some corporations essentially slash and burn their ways through markets, communities, pensions, unions, suppliers, competitors and even countries. With complex structural organization this was truly a Corporation. In addition, English has written episodes of the television crime dramas NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life on the Streets. Overall, I enjoyed the read and wouldn't hesitate to pick up another one of his books just for ease and draw of his writing. Having recently read two volumes of Professor John Newman's projected five volume opus on the JFK assassination, I considered whether any of Newman's named operatives, cryptonyms and pseudonyms may possibly turn up in T.J. English's research. By way of illegal gambling rackets crossing paths with the CIA, Multiple Law enforcement agencies, the Five Families, and shady politicians the Cuban mafia spanned nearly 4 decades and generated millions of dollars along the way. Even still, English compiled over 40 years of the Bolita business in New York into 20 hours.After meeting him and listening to how he did this research I had a new appreciation for the length of the novel and the repetition that sometimes slowed me down . It's just to sell books, every ethnic group has it's malcontents but authors like these exploit The ignorance of Non-Cuban hispanics and Of Course Anglo and Black sympathizers of the regime who want to only talk about the bad of our heritage and not the contributions made. Despite some interesting stories, particularly in the first third of the book, it fell into a mishmash of disjointed anecdotes with few interesting characters.
