TV Also 'Ladies' has what to me is a disappointingly pat 'fairly-tale' ending, absent in 'Whales'. Daniel Bruhl displayed wonder in playing the violin with such feeling, when his dream was almost sabotaged by the two sisters and then their ability to understand and feel in dream in his music touched the soul. And the script he adapted from a real short story was amazing, just so touching.

A lovely movie, but am I the only person to notice its close similarity to 'The Whales of August' (USA, 1987)? It's nothing to do with what they wear, in spite of the movie posters. 8.1. He is so polite that if they had been spies, I wonder if he would have wanted to spoil such a nice day by mentioning it.In the category of movies about older women risking a last chance on love, you could hardly improve on "Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. It is very strong in both story telling and in acting. 'Ladies in Lavender', stars two stalwarts of British stage and screen, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.
The sisters take the boy in and care for him. Absolutely beautiful film with superb acting and great photography...Who could be better than Dench and Smith...a treat to the eyes and a plus for acting. Having a jaded palate, I was expecting to endure rather than enjoy Ladies in Lavender, but I was very quickly won over by the superb acting and the surprisingly high standard of direction.

Part, but only part,of the answer to the question of age posed by jackie-107 lies in the fact that the film is precisely set in 1939, as the Second World War breaks out with the German invasion of Poland, as reported on the radio, and not in 1936. My only complaint was that the editing for the first 30mins of the film lacked sympathy with the plot and, at times, very abrupt.
