I think they brought too much of a sci-fi flavor in this case. It's too bad other people don't give Krull the credit it deserves. Probably the coolest mountain climbing scene's ever filmed. Consider these additional elements: An orchestral soundtrack by the mighty James Horner (Titanic), which is possibly the best score he has ever written, possibly even THE best score ever written; A brilliant mostly-British cast, including Liam Neeson, Robbie Coltrane, Tucker Jenkins :) and a host of other distinguished actors; A script which is so corny that it cannot fail to be fantastic when delivered with such hammed-up enthusiasm by the actors; and finally a few brilliant touches such as the boyhood-dream-weapon the Glave - a giant mind-controlled shuriken. I think all actors did great in this movie and some of them became big or known stars later on in their carrer. (the last movie to give me goosebumps was watching the 5th Element in theatres). Ynyr : Death and power are close ... Rell the Cyclops : Since the beginning. The Krull plot concerns a young hero (no, not Luke Skywalker) with an old mentor (not Obi-Wan Kenobi), who must rescue a princess (not Leia) from an impregnable fortress (which is not the Death Star); otherwise, however, Krull bears no resemblance to Star Wars. On the other hand, the characters are fun, the Beast is truly hideous, and the idea of the Glaive I always found captivating. Prince must rescue princess from monster. Oh, this is a recipe for hot fudge sauce..." he uses the glaive only twice; first to cut open the prison trapping his bride, and second to attack the beast, where it stabs the beast in the chest which is not even enough to kill the monster. Fortunately Rell finds out and throws his axe at the shape-shifter. I had commented on an earlier post that there was a relative lack of good fantasy adventure movies in the early to mid 80s, when the genre was in its Golden Age of sorts. It's one of thouse movies that took me back then by storm. Baleful Polymorph : Played for Laughs in Krull. Was this review helpful? Colwyn ends up defeating the beast with A: Colwyn standing still and gesturing at the far-off Beast while the Glaive attacks it, and B) Colwyn standing still and gesturing at the far-off Beast shooting flames at it.While he's not the first to die in the invasion of the Black Fortress, Rell the Cyclops is the first to die when they actually get inside the Fortress. Was this review helpful? I am a sucker for this golden age of sci-fi fantasy. See the complete profile on LinkedIn and discover Rell’s connections and jobs at similar companies. It smells of death. The good was wonderful and the bad was amusing.
If you like fantasy as a rule (do you like Tolkein? Not very promising so far, is it? What's really funny is that Krull is rated PG for adult content! also, for those of you enjoy soundtracks this was one of the first by James Horner; rousing to say the least. Was this review helpful?
... Bernard Bresslaw as Rell, a Cyclops who knows the date of his death and therefore keeps his own company but is always around when you really need him and a group of bandits that Colwyn manages to enlist.
Ergo the Magnificent tries to turn Colwyn into a duck for making fun of him, but it backfires, duck-ifying Ergo instead. Was this review helpful? Where computerised effects are mainstream today, in this film they are rarely used and the crew get round it with more hands on methods; making the entire piece look far more realistic. i have found recent directorial comments on dvd's to be self-serving. But some of the set decoration could have been done better and despite this movie being rated PG there is some really graphic violence. Excellent special effects for the time in hindsight and with beautiful art direction, this film truly deserves to be dug out and dusted off and shown the respect it deserves. A true British classic! 11 out of 13 found this helpful. And the scene when Rell realized the old Seer had been replaced was spine-tingling! Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? I ended up asking my parents if I could watch it on my birthday every year after that. Rell has 2 jobs listed on their profile. This has always been one of my favorite movies for some reason.
