Mountains comprise two-thirds of the island, forming a single chain. Tourism, in a statistical context, refers to the activity of visitors taking a trip to a destination outside their usual environment, for less than a year. France is the number one tourist destination in the world in terms of arrivals. HOW ARE YOU TRAVELLING?
In 2018, Spain was the most common outbound tourism destination in the EU for people travelling outside their country, with 301 million nights spent in tourist accommodation, or 23 % of the EU total. The global number of tourists to France has more than doubled in the past 15 years. In 2018, the ratio of travel receipts to GDP was highest, among the EU Member States, in Croatia (18.4 %), Cyprus (13.9 %) and Malta (12.7 %), confirming the importance of tourism to these countries (see Table 3). The biggest increase in the number of tourists came from the Asian market, with a 7.4% rise from the previous year in 2018.2019 got off to a rocky start due to yellow vest protests, however, the French government said there had only been increases in tourists’ revenues in January & February 2019. Nearly 7 out of 10 from these 301 million nights spent in Spain were concentrated in three regions: Across the EU, the top four most popular destinations for non-residents were Spain, Italy (217 million nights), France (141 million nights) and Greece (103 million nights), which together accounted for more than half (57.2 %) of the total nights spent by non-residents in the EU-27. Forests make up 20% of the island.
German residents spent 911 million nights on trips outside of Germany in 2018, while residents of France spent 400 million nights abroad; residents from these two EU Member States accounted for more than half (51.0 %) of the total number of nights spent abroad by EU-27 residents. With the great weather, numerous holiday parks in beautiful locations in the south of France, plus lots of facilities for children, it’s a popular market for families over the summer. These figures appear to be influenced by both the size of the Member States and their geographical location (smaller and more northerly countries tended to report a higher propensity for their residents to travel abroad). The third-largest number of visitors is 3.3 million from Germany. There were 207.3 million international arrivals in France in 2017 (both day visitors and overnight). The hotel statistics in France reflect the high number of visitors the region attracts. Wine tourism alone brought in 5.2 billion euros in 2016 and has seen growth in previous years so it is expected to keep growing and contribute more to France’s economy.
