Review: Dawn Richard, Redemption. Even the interludes are worth listening. TV Lilies (Interlude) 14. This onslaught of concepts and sonic rushes drives Redemption right along, carrying the listener through Richard’s vast and captivating imagination. 12 LA (feat. favorites for me are: the unbelievably funky psych-art pop masterwork which is LA (which includes the most triumphant by Trombone Shorty), the Prince referencing art rock heavy jam Hey Nikki, and the powerful house track Love Under Lights (which continues where Gleaux left off!!!!!)
PC She constantly experiments with new sounds and concepts, and each track is a pleasure to listen to.
Rather than serving as a platform for D∆WN and Machinedrum to hybridize and expand the pop form, Redemption offers ornate, glittering garments, which constrict as they envelop.
In a week when every last piece of cultural consumption was coloured by the election of Donald Trump to the United States presidency, Dawn Richard’s third album, It’s all the more remarkable, too, given Richard’s lone-wolf status: fiercely independent, she has existed outside the music industry’s official structures for most of the past half-decade. 2012’s This vindication of Richard’s independence is long overdue but in terms of her creativity contained potential pitfalls.
Though she tends to repeat the styles of her earlier works, Richard still sounds like nobody else in the game, and for that Redemption stands apart.
