Black Work doesn't even come close to that with regard to story, characters, or originality. Jo struggles to remain strong for her family as she questions whether she ever really knew her husband.PC Jo Gillespie is distraught when her husband, Ryan, is found shot dead in an industrial warehouse. A policewoman sets out to discover who murdered her husband, an undercover officer. Black Work is a three-part British detective fiction thriller starring Sheridan Smith as police officer Jo Gillespie. The acting is terrible, with the lead actress strutting about like a runway model and constantly pouting, often at the wrong moments. I couldn't get beyond episode 1, 25 mins in, the scene where the grandmother is on the phone with the media, berating them for not mentioning more about her son's death and telling them he was undercover.
When she meets Ryan's former boss at the funeral, her misgivings appear justified. Top flight acting as well. And there are no likeable or even sympathetic characters, just pathetic characters. British series that merit 5 stars would be The Shadow Line, Prime Suspect, The Fall, Red Riding Trilogy, the first season of Line of Duty. There's little depth to any of these characters who move in predictable ways in a basic game of checkers.
