This is a book that anyone who calls themselves "American" needs to read. The audiobook is narrated by the author, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and it made the experience deeper for me.Holy shit this book. Folks that love Mr. Coates will love this book, as they'll be able to follow him through a piece that is somewhat indulgent -- but he certainly won't win new fans or quell his skeptics (like myself) with this piece of work. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. It challenged me so fundamentally and starkly in a way that I have never been challenged, reading a book, in my life.
My resentment of what he symbolizes comes from the absence of the same position and opportunity being afforded any Black American woman writer in our time.
