This is a very quiet time in terms of visitor numbers. The water's alkalinity comes from the sodium carbonate and other minerals that flow into the lake from the surrounding hills. Lake Natron This spectacular area sits just north east of the Ngorongoro Crater and forms part of Africa's immense Great Rift Valley. The wildebeest migration is making its way through the western regions of the Serengeti, crossing the Grumeti River. East Africa has 1.5-2.5 million Lesser Flamingos, representing three-quarters of the world population and most of them are hatched at Lake Natron.
Amazingly, 2.5 million flamingos make Lake Natron their home and it is considered one of their only breeding grounds, making preservation of the lake an environmental concern. Many of the tented camps are closed in April, however the larger lodges remain open.
